Shahrzaad (= Scheherazade)

Shahrzaad (= Scheherazade)

The miniature plays an important part in the traditional Iranian and Persian art of painting. Miniatures are stylized and strongly symbolic images. They have been perfected in many centuries of development. Of course, being a painting, the miniature is completely two-dimensional.

Shahrzaad is haar traditionele naam in Farsi. For years I've been dreaming about creating a miniature in iron. Not flat, as in a silhouette, but as a high relief. When you look at such an iron structure from different angles, it will come alive in a most spectacular manner. As subject for this work of art I chose Scheherazade, the narrator of the famous Tales of 1001 Nights. Shahrzaad is her traditional name in Farsi.
The Tales of 1001 Nights have been translated in many languages. Those editions often offer the most beautiful illustrations. Of course you will find Scheherazade portrayed in these, too. It is interesting to see how such images vary with the period and the nationality of the artist.

I have based my design fully on Iranian tradition, to pay homage to the countless Persian artists who have depicted Shahrzaad through the centuries. My drawing as shown here is not completely finished yet. Shahrzaad will carry a rose in her left hand and a drinking bowl in her right hand, in which she serves wine. The miniature will further be completed (as is usual) with several other symbols, such as a vine, a wine crock, a tree, a nightingale and a gazelle.
After the first steps. The face is waiting to be finished with nose and mouth; a really most precarious task. Nearly all the details of the body still have to be added. But it will be clear from the photo that this unique method of working will result in a very special and singularly strong effect. The spatial character of this work can alas not be shown very well in a photo. To taste that, you need to be able to walk around it.
