IJzeren bloemen

Iron flowers

This rose, just opening its petals to the kissing sun, is made from 1 mm steel sheet. The petals are made separately and then assembled. Next to be hammered is the corolla. This is quite deep and has to be annealed to prevent tearing. Finally, the stem is made from round bar. The typical texture is generated under the hammer.

After completion the flower is annealed in a propane-fired forging hearth. In the flame, after a minute or so, the steel reaches an orange-red heat; its temperature then is ca 700° Celsius. After removing the rose from the flame, it cools down quickly. In the righthand photo the temperature in the centre is ± 400° Celsius.

The rose shown above is a fully 3D-model, in other words, as regards shape, a lifelike representation of the natural example. The tree branch, of which I show a detail below, is further stylized in a, so to say, 2½D-model (haut relief).

This is a special feature of working in iron - which no other material offers. The outline of the branch is sketched as a silhouette, using round or square iron bar. The leaves are cut one by one from steel sheet and shaped under the hammer. After which the veins are embossed to give them relief. The leaves are not in the same plane as the branch, which results in a very plastic image with surprising shadows. The effect is particularly succinct when the branch is viewed from various directions.

N.B. Deze details zijn nog niet gereinigd.
This method of working can yield the really most beautiful results. Have a close look at the detailed photos below of some flowers and a vine ...

I freely admit that I am really very happy with that vine!

The pieces we have seen above all are still uncoloured and without any patina. When they are finished in such a manner, very carefully of course, the end effect can be even stronger. See the bouquet in the photo below.

To finish, several macro shots of the same rose shown at the top of this page, now with a very subtle patina.
